As a nineteen-year old from Palmyra, Michigan, he pitched in a game with the Page Fence Giants in 1895 but did not figure in the decision. The remainder of the year he played with Adrian in the Michigan State League, posting a 29-4 record while batting .327 and also playing in the outfield. He rejoined the Page Fence Giants, and after the 1898 season, when the team disbanded, he was among the players from the ballclub who formed the Columbia Giants.
He was an ace pitcher with the Chicago-based team for the two seasons of their existence, and when Frank Leland combined the team with the Chicago Unions to form the Chicago Union Giants, he also pitched with the new aggregation. After he was no longer with top teams in the United States, he pitched with the Havana team in the Cuban winter league in 1907.
